Artist Statement
I construct flowers that have developed aspects of other species, either though direct human intervention or as a result of our environmental destructiveness. From a distance my flowers look beautiful. Up close, their fangs, teeth, animal characteristics become visible.
My concern is that the natural world is being manipulated and altered in irreversible, unpredictable ways. Some changes are apparent, but many remain hidden.
These flowers pose questions about what is visible and what is invisible. Can we see beyond the obvious? Can we look closely at how we live our lives? Do we know what is happening to our planet? Do we have the curiosity and nerve to question what is natural and what is not, what is beautiful and what is dangerous?
Can we expose and celebrate our own creative forces, even if they, too, reveal wildness and danger?
Working out these questions in my studio is a deep and passionate experience. I take chances, hear my own voice, and remember who I am.
